Answering "rally" cry again, Pandas sweep the Clan

(November 14, 2009) For the second straight night, the University of Alberta Pandas fell behind early, but responded once again, defeating the Simon Fraser University Clan women’s volleyball team 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-11) to improve to 7-1 on the season. The loss drops the Clan to 0-6 on the year.

SFU flew out of the gate, leading 8-5 at the first break of the first set following a kill by Colleen Douville. After Alberta tied the game at 13-13, Douville extended the Clan advantage to 16-14 with another kill at the second technical timeout. The Pandas once again battled back to tie the game at 21-21 following a kill by Tiffany Proudfoot, however SFU won four of the next five points, closing out the first set 25-22 on a Kristen Knapp kill.

The Pandas responded in the second set, and led 8-5 at the first break following a block by Krista Zubick and Meggie Moir. With the game tied at 15-15, Moir connected on a kill to give Alberta the lead at the second technical timeout. The back-and-forth set continued, with Simon Fraser leading 20-17 following another Douville kill. Alberta did not quit, tying the game at 21-21 and winning the second set 25-23 on a Proudfoot kill.

Alberta controlled the third set, leading 8-3 at the first break after a Moir service ace and 16-9 at the second break following another Proudfoot kill. The Pandas owned the third set, and Jennifer Restall capped off the 25-13 set win with a kill to give Alberta the 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth.

In the final set, Alberta led 8-3 at the first break following a Knapp attack error, and led 16-6 after a block by Zubick, ultimately winning the set 25-11 to take the match 3-1.

For the Pandas, Proudfoot led her team with 18 kills, while Jaki Ellis added 33 set assists, and Restall had the team lead in digs with 13. For the Clan, Douville had a team high 18 kills, while Brooke Halvorsen had 24 set assists, and Brianna Kellough added 21 digs.

The Clan are back in action next weekend when they host Saskatchewan, while the Pandas are at Regina.
