(October 14, 2005) The defending National Champion University of Alberta Golden Bears hockey team opened their 2005-2006 Canada West regular season with a hard-fought 2-1 home ice victory over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds Friday night in Edmonton.
UBC netminder Gerry Festa (Calgary, AB, 1st), who spent his 20-year old season with the Red Deer Rebels stole the show and almost stole the game for Head Coach Milan Dragicevic as he made 42 saves for an injury-depleted ‘Birds squad.
After a scoreless first period Alberta (1-0 Canada West, 6-2 overall) finally opened up the scoring at 15:11 on the powerplay as freshman Tyler Metcalfe (Headingly, Man) directed a Harlan Anderson (Vernon, BC, 3rd) pass of the goal post, and then Justin Wallin (North Battleford, SK, 5th) pounced on a loose puck and tapped the puck into an open net.
The Thunderbirds (1-2 Canada West) tied the game just over two minutes later as Edmonton native Darrell May, who was recruited by Alberta this past summer, poked the puck past Golden Bears netminder Aaron Sorochan (Edmonton, 1st) off a scramble in front to tie the game 1-1.
Just forty seconds later at 18:35 of the second, Alberta’s Perry Johnson (Edmonton, 5th) beat Festa through the five-hole for the eventual game winner.
“UBC battled us hard and Festa played very well for them,” said Golden Bears Head Coach Eric Thurston who picked up his first Conference win as a Coach.
“We are going to have to convert more of our opportunities and play better tomorrow night,” added Thurston.
Alberta outshot the Thunderbirds 44-20. UBC went 0 for 4 on the powerplay, with the Golden Bears 1 for 4 with the extra man.
UBC played without forwards Kyle Bruce (Garden Bay, BC, 2nd), Tyler Dietrich (West Vancouver, BC, 1st), Adam Taylor (Courtenay, BC, 1st) and Peter Hay (Burnaby, BC, 5th).
The Golden Bears Ben Thomson (Coaldale, AB, 3rd) and Tim Krymusa (Morden, MB, 3rd) did not finish the game.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 7:30 PM when the Bears raise the banner for their record-setting 11th National Championship.
