(February 11, 2006) A late second half run by the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns edged them past the University of Golden Bears, 68-67, Saturday night in the U of A's Main Gym.
The Bears needed a last second three-pointer to tie the game and force overtime, when Dean Whalen barely stepped over the line and drained a deuce with 1.7 seconds on the clock, leaving Lethbridge with the win and a chance at returning to the U of A to face Alberta in the opening round of the Canada West playoffs.
From the 8:06 mark of the first half to the 2:25 mark of the second, the Bears led the game and were seemingly in control.
Tyson Jones drained a three-ball mid-way through the first to put Alberta up for the majority of the game, including a 31-25 score at the half. Jones finished with a first-half eight, while Scott Gordon continued his strong play of late by chipping in eight as well.
Bruce Carbert paced the Pronghorn attack with 11 points through 20 minutes.
Once the second half got under way, it was clear that Lethbridge was going to make their season count. The Pronghorns are currently in a battle with the Calgary Dinos for the third and final divisional playoff spot and the right to play Alberta. The U of L needed to secure at least one win this weekend, while the Dinos needed to drop a pair to the division leading, Saskatchewan Huskies. Calgary lost their first match last night in Saskatoon, giving a glimmer of hope for the Pronghorns.
The two sides traded points in the early going but as the half-way point drew closer, Lethbridge stepped up their efforts.
Effort that was rewarded as the visitors went on a 17-2 run, cutting through the Golden Bears lead. Carbert then stepped to the free-throw line and drained a pair to tie the score.
In the end it came down to Whalen's near three-point attempt as the Bears finish the regular season with a 10-10 conference record, 17-16 overall.
Gordon finished the night as he did last night, the game high scorer, this time with 20 points giving him 50 during the two game series. Jones finished with 11.
Carbert, Matthew Bekkering, Tim Whitehead and Scott MacKinnon all piled up double digit scoring totals with 16, 14, 13 and 12 respectively.
Calgary and Saskatchewan will meet again Sunday afternoon in Saskatoon to determine if the Dinos or Pronghorns will travel to Alberta. The Bears will host the weekend of February 17-19 in the Main Gym. Game times and opponent are TBA.
Prior to the game, Alberta head coach Don Horwood honoured four members of the Golden Bears who are all at the end of their CIS eligibility and played their final regular season game at the U of A. Moving on after this season are Gavin Fedorak, James Hudson, Dean Whalen and Phil Sudol.
